Exclusive Interview with R. Scott Dibble on the new Faul! The Musical album coming out 6/18!
– Can you tell us about your history with Samuels & Scott Ltd and what lead to this current project and the partnership with Chris Paul Overall?
R. Scott Dibble – Dave Cornblum (Samuels & Scott Ltd and former Shave lead singer, lyricist) and I wanted to work together for some time and then we did the song Unwind as After Shave for the local comp _headsame Remains the Change vol. 6. Quite a while after that, I had written music for another tune which became After the Rains. Dave added melody and lyrics and we started building a whole record of genre-jumping tunes entitled After the Rains.
When we got past the writing stage with Faul!, Dave said let’s get an outside “trained” singer. Our first thought was Chris as we both dig his voice and history with LB bands. Chris dug the musical and got to work!
– Can you tell me about Faul! The Musical?
R. Scott Dibble – It’s a wacky idea but we ran with it. It started with a song Dave threw at me and when I heard the lyric and form, I thought this could be a modern musical. I had some compositions lying around for something like that, wrote some new ones and we got to work. We had the core idea but developed the narrative with each song.
– How did the songs develop? The music and sounds are incredible!
R. Scott Dibble – We thought it should have a retro approach but not stuck in the past. Going for the mid-60’s recording sound with modern tech! We had friends and local Long Beach musicians track drums, bass, guitars, brass separately (due to Covid). The last session was a live string quartet! I also used the Arturia Mellotron virtual instrument extensively to represent the time period, and Faul as the sounds it makes are samples essentially. Also, instrumentals as “unheard demos” to inform the timeline.
– What did you use to record the album?
R. Scott Dibble – Fortunately, everyone we know is a local musician or producer, OR BOTH, with a studio. hahahaha. I built all the tracks via Logic ProX, Arturia instruments and various plug-ins. Drums, bass, guitars, brass and strings, vocals on the record are the real deal.
– Was it difficult to develop the album in these covid times?
R. Scott Dibble – For me – no. It gave me a excellent focus during Covid.
– Please tell us about the great cast in Faul! The Musical.
R. Scott Dibble – Everyone did excellent work on this. Chris is the focus on vocals but all the players nailed their parts. I asked a variety of friends and got recommendations on who to ask for certain instruments. It ended up being people I had worked with before and often except for the string quartet.
– Do you believe the Paul is Dead conspiracy theory to be true?
R. Scott Dibble – I do not. I love the story, the weirdness of it and the fact that these things travel through time and seem to gain momentum the further away from the era they were perpetrated in. It’s fascinating and sparks great conversation.
– We’re you a Beatles fan growing up?
R. Scott Dibble – HUGE fan! I heard The Beatles first when I was about 5 years old. Lady Madonna/Inner Light 45. Those sounds and musical styles are with me to this day. When I saw the movie “Help!” at age 8, I knew I was going to be a musician/songwriter/composer. Faul! – The Musical, for me, is really a BIG thank you to the boys for igniting my musical imagination.
– Do you have a favorite Beatles album or song?
R. Scott Dibble – Revolver. Hands down.
– What are your plans for Faul! The Musical in 2021 and beyond?
R. Scott Dibble – We have a few things planned. Beyond the digital release, we’re talking about pressing a vinyl LP with original art poster, program and postcard later this Summer and putting out a animated video for one the songs or perhaps the whole album in the Fall.
– Any performances?
R. Scott Dibble – Eventtually. Most likely in 2022. I’m just going to stand in the wings and enjoy the show. So, yeah – a few local theatre performances and then off to Broadway! hahaha
– Where can people find Faul! The Musical?
R. Scott Dibble – We are slotted for a 6/18 digital release across all platforms via CD Baby distribution. LP, with aforementioned goodies, coming later this Summer.
